Tucson, AZ—Mountain Shadow Gallery is pleased to present new works by Emily Ralph. The new works will be on view from September 1 through September 30, 2008. There will a reception for the artist on Thursday, September 11, 2008 from 5pm to 7pm. The artist will be attending the reception.
While a student at the University of Arizona, Ralph’s paintings were steadily influenced by a number of artistic styles. The strongest of these include the expressionists, early and contemporary surrealists, textiles and tapestry, and popular culture illustration. Growing up in the southwest has also affected her work, with readily available cultural stimuli from both Native Americans and near-by Mexico.
Her subject matter has ranged from nature and decay to sociological iconography. Ralph continues to explore religious symbolism and female mythology, with a new found interest in medieval stained glass. A straight-forward description might be "painted collage"- constantly combining seemingly unrelated images into organic visual metaphors. Each piece is an implied narrative, and although every work holds explicit personal meaning, her intent is to invite a unique translation by each subsequent viewer.
Emily Ralph was born March 25th, 1981, in Phoenix, Arizona. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Arizona in 2004, receiving a B.A. in Studio Art, with minors in Art Education and Creative Writing. She specialized in 2-D Studio, with a dual emphasis in Oils and Fiber Arts. She currently works at Desert Sky Community School, a charter school based on Waldorf methods.
Mountain Shadow Gallery is located at 3001 E. Skyline Drive, Suite 109, on the NE corner of Skyline and Campbell, and is open 7 days a week: Monday thru Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM; Sunday 11 AM to 5 PM.
